repair vs. replace my heating cooling system

Repair vs. Replace Your Heating/Cooling Systems

When should I replace my furnace, air conditioner or heat pump?
To repair or replace, that is the question that likely comes to mind whenever your heating or cooling system stops working like it should. Although repairing may be the most affordable solution now, it might not be the best choice over the long run.
The 4K Rule
Multiply the repair cost times the age of the product. If the answer is 4,000 points or more it may be a better investment to replace rather than repair the product. This takes into account not only today’s repair costs but also the likelihood of future repair costs. Off-setting that is the lower energy usage a new product will likely provide along with warranty protection.

On the other hand, a point value of less that 4,000 generally indicates repair is a better option.

Examples:

Unit is 12 years old and needs a $500 repair. 12 X 500 = 6,000 points. It may be best to use the money that was going to be spent on the repair and invest it in a replacement unit.

Unit is 8 years old and needs a $300 repair. 8 X 300 = 2,400 points. It would typically be best to repair the unit versus replace.
Summary
Even if needed repair costs don’t quite hit or exceed the 4,000 point value, you might want to replace your system if it’s simply more than 12 years old or you’ve had a history of problems with it. Also, it might be worthwhile to take advantage of one of several opportunities:

Convenience – When you purchase a new system, you can avoid the hassle of unexpected repairs down the line, and you don’t have to risk that parts may become obsolete.

Lower utility bills – A high efficiency home comfort system from your qualified contractor can save you hundreds of dollars each year in energy costs, compared to an older system. Energy savings of 30% are not uncommon.

Incentives – Often there are incentives available from manufacturers, the government and even energy utility companies. Typically you can recover a sizeable portion of your investment by selecting high efficiency products.

Friendlier refrigerant – Due to growing environmental concerns, the U.S. federal government has mandated that all HVAC manufacturers phase R-22 refrigerant-based equipment out of production as of January 2008. In response, Thomas & Galbraith only handles product that is manufactured with R-410A, a United States EPA approved, chlorine free refrigerant.

Enhanced comfort – Advanced technologies that improve energy efficiency also enhance your comfort, so you can enjoy more even temperatures, better humidity control and a constant flow of conditioned air.

Improved air quality – Better air control means a reduced potential for mold and mildew growth and much improved air quality. Air purifiers and UV light systems provide increased comfort and much healthier indoor air by minimizing the impact of indoor pollutants.
Is there anything I should check prior to calling for service?
Yes. Check to be sure that the power is on to the furnace, air conditioner, heat pump and/or your air handler unit. Check to ensure that the breakers and the power disconnects are turned on and be sure the thermostat is set correctly. Finally, make sure your air filter is clean and not blocked - a blocked air filter will cause poor air flow and possibly other equipment failures.
How much does a new replacement system cost?
Due to the many different makes, models and customer needs, price is an issue that can only be solved by doing a thorough evaluation of your home and existing equipment. Beware of companies that are willing to quote a replacement heating and cooling system price to you over the phone. Every single installation is different, requiring custom installation. This makes over the phone or over the internet quotations suspect. Working over the phone or over the internet it is impossible to address the dozens of variables to make sure the installation is correct and that the quoted product size and efficiency is correct.

Insist on an in home evaluation from your trusted heating and cooling contracting professional to make sure that the installation will be accurate and the product is correctly sized for your application. Don’t make a 20 year indoor comfort investment over the phone, or over the internet. Be sure to work with a company that will provide your needed in home consultation free of charge and with no high pressure.
